Blastocyst Culture

Frequently Asked Questions for Assisted Reproduction

Blastocyst Culture

It is possible to extent the culture of embryos to the blastocycst stage.
Five to six days after fertilization the embryos will have developed to blastocyst. At this stage, the embryos have 60-200 cells which are differentiated into two distinct lineages: the trophectoderm, which lie on the periphery of the blastocyst and will give rise to the placenta and the inner cell mass, which are the cells that will form the fetus.
The embryos which reach the blastocyst stage are thought to have greater developmental potential, thus in some couples it is recommended to have embryo transfer on the 5th day after fertilization (to extent the culture of embryos to the blastocyst stage, as an extra tool for our final choice of embryos to transfer).
