Investigation of Subfertility
The initial investigation of the causes of subfertility is very important because it will largely determine the approach of treatment.
The couple will meet with the specialized gynecologist of our Unit and will discuss the medical history of both members of the couple and the necessary diagnostic tests will be proposed.
For the man, it is usually recommended to have a semen analysis. Analysis of the ejaculated semen will provide valuable information about the quality and quantity of spermatozoa present in the sperm and give evidence about the causes of infertility. Nevertheless it cannot determine the fertilization ability of man.The doctor may also request blood tests for the estimation hormonal levels of FSH, LH, androgens.
For the woman, the doctor may recommend blood test for the estimation of FSH, LH TSH, Oestradiol, Progesterone, Prolactin and Anti-Müllerian Hormone. The ultrasound examination of the uterus and the ovaries is necessary and depending on the medical history of the woman, hysterosalpingography may be required.
When all diagnostic tests are completed, the couple will meet again with the doctor to discuss the results of the tests and decide the proper treatment according to the individual needs of the couple.
